Neurorecreation

A new phenomenon regarding the relationship between recreation and neuroscience, coined as neurorecreation, underlies a new concept and/or a new field of research. Recent studies into the possible relationships between recreation and neuroscience have the potential to contribute a great deal to understanding of recreation in terms of behavioral, functional, physiological, and neurochemical effects. The aim of this study, was to explain and outline the concept and phenomenon of “Neuro- Recreation” as the intersection of Recreation and Neuroscience. The findings from theoretical explanations also have important implications, which primarily suggest that recreation — which is a powerful contributor to the emotional, physical, mental, and social well-being of individuals — is a meaningful form of experience. These explanations also theorize that using neuroscientific measures can provide an alternative method of measuring, understanding, designing, and optimizing experiences offered in a recreational context.

The details of the study, which was carried out to provide feedback to those involved in the fields of waterslides, entertainment, recreation — from attraction designers to recreational park investors and local government — as well as to guide future designs in this field.

Highlights

'I majored in Economics at Boğaziçi University, one of the foremost and prestigious universities in Turkey. I ranked 148th out of 2 million students after high school and after 4 years I was graduated with a high honour degree from my university.

I continued my education while simultaneously starting down my professional career path. I was accepted into the master’s program – studying Economic History, also at Boğaziçi University – while also beginning my position as a Human Resources Generalist for the Pfizer Pharmaceutical Company’s HR Department. My responsibilities covered all recruitment, career development and performance and training processes for Finance, Marketing and the Human Resources departments I consider it a great asset to my professional experience to begin my career at a prestigious global company like Pfizer, a leader in human resources practices, and attend to all the processes for which I was responsible to be able to see the big picture at the beginning of my career.

After sixth months at Pfizer, I was promoted to assistant human resources manager. By the time I left Pfizer – to join our family’s business, Polin Waterparks – I was on the career path of working in Corporate Communications Management. In my first position at Polin Waterparks, I managed all the Human Resources, Marketing and Sales departments. At the time, Polin was a contract manufacturing business serving a single client. Eventually, the business evolved to require the need for both reorganization and prospective export targets. In supporting this transition, I was part of the team that took the first initiatives toward structuring the human resources, sales and marketing departments, both in-house and abroad, and I managed three crucial departments.

I then transferred my responsibilities in the human resources department to a colleague who I personally interviewed. I turned over responsibility for the sales department to the esteemed Kubilay Alpdoğan, our present General Manager. I then focused exclusively on marketing and communications.

I am delighted and proud to be a part of an organization that has expanded across 114 countries from its start as a one-country contract manufacturer.

Over the years, we developed a very strong network of contacts, and I met people from all over the world. During this period, we grew our brand to a global level, and I was involved in many private and local projects. As with my previous endeavors, I consider myself very fortunate to have had these experiences.

In the meantime, I worked on a team conducting market research and had the chance to closely follow market dynamics. For 20 years, I have worked in the attractions industry and have developed a passion for it. I feel I can truly say that I love it with all my heart. And that is always my goal – to lead from the heart. I’m incredibly grateful for the many opportunities in which I’ve had the chance to give numerous talks and work on great projects with great people – senior people, young people, teenagers, children, and others from all over the world. I consider those opportunities to be my treasure. In the years ahead, I hope to use all my experiences and the strong network of connections I have developed in my experiences to serve the whole industry.
